About
AFOCAL uses systems thinking to help leaders build resilient, adaptable and healthy organisational systems that thrive in an increasingly complex and disruptive world.
We (Shona Erskine and Katt Osborne) founded AFOCAL because of our shared commitment to healthier systems, sustainable communities, and new ways of thinking about leadership and change.
OUR CATALYST
In 2024, we began an 18-month journey to test the hypothesis that systems thinking is a valuable disruption to the way we approach the health of our organisations, leadership, and strategic planning.
We wanted to investigate the relevance and practical use of systems thinking to frame, understand, and respond to complex and persistent challenges that many organisations face.
Supported by Creative Australia and the WA State Government, we worked with five Western Australian arts and cultural organisations to apply systems thinking frameworks to real-world organisational challenges.
Throughout this project, we deepened our knowledge of systems theory, interrogated available methodologies, and developed a robust understanding of the practical implications for applying systems thinking within organisations and communities.
What began as research quickly became a deep commitment to this work. Since then, systems thinking has become central to how we understand leadership, organisations and system stewardship.
